VARDENBURG, Mass. (AP) — Pfizer is the latest drugmaker to warn Americans about erectile dysfunction, potentially affecting millions of men who suffer from it, a new company said Thursday.
The company says it has received hundreds of reports of people taking Viagra, a drug that treats enlarged prostates, including erectile dysfunction. A Pfizer spokeswoman declined to be named, but several other drugmakers have been involved in the lawsuits.
Viagra, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, is approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, but it is not available over the counter.
Pfizer said it is reviewing the lawsuits, which it believes represent more than 2,000 cases. The companies said they are aware of the cases but have not yet decided what they will do about them.
“This is a significant step in protecting men and their partners who suffer from erectile dysfunction from the pharmaceutical companies,” said David K. Rosenfeld, Pfizer’s chief medical officer. “This is not a quick fix.”
Viagra’s maker, Eli Lilly & Co., which owns Cialis and Stendra, has a strong case against Pfizer for erectile dysfunction, and some of the same lawsuits against Eli Lilly are still pending in the U. District Court for the District of Columbia.
In April, the Food and Drug Administration granted a temporary restraining order preventing Pfizer from marketing Viagra in the U. but the company said it would not be marketing it without approval from the FDA.
“This decision is not being taken lightly,” said Edward M. Kennedy, a Pfizer spokesman.
The companies also said Thursday that they would not comment on the cases until a decision on the lawsuits is made. Some of the lawsuits are still pending.
The lawsuits have been filed in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Texas, and the companies are expected to take action. In Pennsylvania, the cases are still pending. The companies are also appealing that decision.
In August, the FDA warned that “Viagra and other drugs that increase blood flow to the penis, including Levitra and Stendra, may cause erectile dysfunction and potentially lead to death,” the company said in a statement. The warning was not specific about the possible dangers of Viagra or Stendra.
In a letter to Pfizer last month, the company noted that it has received several reports of people taking Viagra, including one in which a woman who took the drug for years was able to get an erection. The letter said that patient reports were “unfounded.”
The FDA also issued a public advisory about the use of Viagra and Stendra in treating impotence in men who have undergone prostate surgery and had a prostatic cancer, the company said.
Pfizer is working to get a report from the FDA about the potential risks and benefits of Viagra and Stendra.
The FDA is reviewing the cases and will decide what the long-term consequences of the warnings are.
The companies said Friday that they will seek approval to launch generic versions of Viagra, and that they will begin selling them to patients in the U. next month.
The lawsuits are still pending in the U.
